Our History
The roots of the Free Will Baptist movement can be traced back as far as the early 17th century. A Welsh congregation settling on the Delaware River produced several men who strongly held that God has given mankind a “free will”.
One of these men, Paul Palmer, is credited with starting the first Free Will Baptist Church in 1727, which was located in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Benjamin Randall instituted the first Free Will Baptist Church in the Northeast, in the Durham New Hampshire area on June 30, 1780. The General Conference of Free Will Baptists was organized in 1827.
Free Will Baptists have had a historic presence in West Virginia, especially in the Eastern Panhandle, and in particular, in Harpers Ferry. In 1867, Free Will Baptists were instrumental in starting Storer College, the first college in West Virginia for those brought from Africa as slaves.
Today Free Will Baptist Churches exist in nearly every part of the world with National offices in Antioch, Tennessee.
The Victory Church was started only a short time ago in a continuing initiative to re-introduce Free Will Baptist Churches into an area rich in Free Will Baptist History. Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Inwood, West Virginia was established in the late 1990’s and was the first of three planned for the Eastern Panhandle, Victory is the second.
Victory was organized as a self supporting Free Will Baptist Church in November 2002, and in 2004 the new church building was constructed in Halltown.
Victory Church is a self governing body of believers, an independent church that has chosen to associate with both the State Association
and National Association of Free Will Baptists. For Victory Church and Free Will Baptists, the highest level of authority is the local
church body.
